Whatever stage they're at.
I tutor Chemistry at every level of the Scottish secondary curriculum. Support is shaped by the demands of the course and the needs of the individual pupil: some need core understanding rebuilt, others need to turn solid knowledge into marks.
National 5 Chemistry
National 5 is where the habits form. Pupils who leave it with genuine understanding, rather than memorised answers, find Higher far more manageable. Lessons focus on building secure foundations in the key concepts, getting comfortable with calculations, and learning to read a question properly before answering it.
Higher Chemistry
Higher is the level most pupils find hardest, and it's rarely because the content is impossible. It's because the questions stop testing recall and start testing application: unfamiliar contexts, longer written answers, more marks riding on precision. Lessons focus on applying knowledge confidently, structuring written responses and building fluency with Qualifications Scotland-style questions.
Advanced Higher Chemistry
Advanced Higher demands more depth, more mathematical confidence and more independence, and it comes with a project. I support the taught course throughout the year and offer separate, focused help with the project itself.

What actually happens in an hour.
No two lessons look the same, because no two pupils arrive with the same problem. The structure, though, is consistent.
Enquire about lessonsA topic that didn't land in class, a homework question, an upcoming assessment, a past paper that went badly. The pupil sets the agenda; I make sure we cover what matters.
I create notes and resources live during the lesson: explanations, worked examples, diagrams and key definitions, all shaped around the way that pupil is thinking about the topic, then take it straight into exam-style Qualifications Scotland questions.
Lesson notes are saved as PDFs and uploaded to the pupil's own Google Drive folder, so by exam season they have a revision resource built entirely around their own gaps. Where extra practice would consolidate a topic, I set targeted questions and give feedback.
What we work on.
The balance shifts depending on the pupil's course, their confidence and what's coming up in their calendar.
- Strengthening understanding of key Chemistry concepts
- Working through Qualifications Scotland-style questions
- Improving answer structure and use of correct terminology
- Identifying the mistakes that come up again and again
- Building confidence ahead of assessments and exams
- Getting comfortable with calculations and the maths behind them
Advanced Higher project support.
Guidance and feedback for pupils working through their Advanced Higher Chemistry project, at whatever stage they've reached.
The project is where a lot of Advanced Higher pupils lose ground, and it's rarely because the chemistry is beyond them. It's because the requirements are unfamiliar, the write-up is unlike anything they've done before, and uncertainties are the first thing to unravel. This support is designed to help pupils understand what's being asked of them, improve the clarity of their explanations and strengthen the overall quality of their own work.
What support can include
- Discussing suitable project ideas or possible areas of investigation
- Understanding the requirements of the project
- Reviewing the underlying chemistry
- Discussing experimental method and practical considerations
- Understanding uncertainty, how to calculate and present it appropriately
- Interpreting and presenting results clearly
- Feedback on structure, clarity and scientific explanation
- Identifying areas of the report that could be strengthened
How it works
Project support is arranged as individual 1:1 sessions. The number needed depends entirely on the stage of the project and the type of help required: some pupils book one session on uncertainties, others check in across several months.
Before a session, pupils share the specific area they'd like help with: underlying chemistry, method, results, uncertainties or the written report. That makes the hour focused rather than exploratory. During the session we discuss the project together, identify what needs clarifying and work through whatever chemistry, calculations or explanation they're finding difficult.
The work stays the pupil's own.
I give guidance, explanation and feedback. I don't write, complete or ghostwrite project work. My job is to help a pupil produce their best work, not to produce it for them.
What to include when you enquire: The pupil's project stage, the area they'd like support with, and any relevant deadlines.

Online 1:1, usually an hour, paid after each lesson. No packages and nothing upfront, just the support that fits where the pupil is now.
